I recently talked with someone who owns a toy poodle, and I wanted to share part of the conversation. Here, I detailed how the owner could figure out what her dog loves and make potty training easier.
Me: Let us start from the beginning; maybe your dog enjoys petting, or perhaps beef treats, or even salmon dog food. There are so many options here, and you have to determine what your dog inclines to. One more than the other?
Michelle: Well, How do you do that?
Me: You have to be empathetic in that moment, which is not easy to do. But that is what a professional dog trainer will do.
Michelle: Ok
Me: Let us look at potty training now. What is the target? Let’s say it’s over the grass. So you’ll use your non-verbals, such as using the leash or maybe picking up the dog and having that valuable treat in your hand. Then you take them to the target. You need to deploy patience while you wait for the dog to do it, and the moment they do, you leverage the value of the treat and give it to the dog over the target. It would help if you did enough of this, so the dog thinks this is a remarkable moment and needs to remember this.
