I recently got the opportunity to work with a family and their German Shepherd puppy, Zelda. The stay command is among the first things that I teach any dog, including any of my German Shepherd dogs. This skill is so useful and incredibly needed.
I’ve also noticed over the years how complicated we make this. So, if you have been struggling with this skill, I want you to watch this video and then go try and teach it to your dog. When you are doing that, please, don’t overcomplicate it.
Here are the main three things you are trying to convey to your dog.
- Getting on the bed is good
- Laying down on the bed is the best
- Coming off the bed without my permission gets you no reward and I’ll use the leash to place it back.
When you first start teaching the stay command, get rid of all the distractions, and make sure that your puppy or dog completely understands those three statements. If they don’t understand them and then you choose to make it more complicated, you might just be setting them up for failure.
Don’t do that.
As always, I’m here if you need help. Just send me a quick text and I’ll reply back ASAP. This help is free and won’t cost you one cent.
