6 Remote Collar Tips You NEED to Know!
Hi gang, it’s Al the Dog Trainer, and today I’m bringing you some essential remote collar tips.
First, make it easy for yourself to remember to put the receiver on your dog. A great tip is to keep it on top of your dog’s kennel. If you’re constantly hunting for your transmitter and receiver, it will make things more difficult. Inconsistent use of your equipment will eventually lead to problems.
Next, make sure to put the collar on your dog every time you’re about to reward them. Anything you do right before rewarding your dog can become associated with the reward. For example, I always aim for my dogs to run towards me when they see me grab the receiver. If your dog is running away, they likely don’t associate your actions with a reward.
It’s also crucial to become familiar with every button and function on your receiver and transmitter. Knowledge is power. Understanding how the equipment works helps keep your communication with your dog clear. Misusing these tools is easy, but if you’re watching this video, it’s clear you care about your dog and want to be fair and consistent. Becoming knowledgeable will protect your relationship with your dog.
When you start using voice commands with your remote collar, always have a leash on your dog to clarify what you’re asking them to do. Learning something new can be confusing for your dog, so it’s our responsibility to avoid being inconsistent. Having the leash will help your dog get things right, especially when they’re unsure, and it will make your training more effective.
Another important tip is to keep the collar levels low. When I use a remote collar, like the ones from e-collar Technologies, I never raise the volume above 15 out of 100 during the first few sessions. Most of the time, I actually lower the levels in the early stages. The goal is for the sensation of the collar to become a predictor of a reward. Starting with low levels helps create clarity with the voice command and increases your dog’s resiliency. Turning up the volume too quickly or starting too high can have the opposite effect.
Lastly, if you’re unsure about using the remote collar, get a professional with experience involved. If you need help, feel free to send me a message. My team and I can help you find a quality dog trainer to guide you through the process and make the most out of your dog’s training.
